slowing skin aging
Delaying aging factors
the Microbiome connection
Our skin ecosystem has a big influence on how well our skin ages, as it contains most of the genes expressed on the skin. The rate of skin aging is directly affected by the balance of microorganisms on our skin - this balance can either help delay skin aging or accelerate it.
As skin matures, there's a significant shift in the microbiome, and this change contributes to the aging process. Beneficial microbes like Lactobacillus and Cutibacterium (linked to well hydrated youthful skin) decline as we age; others like Corynebacterium (associated with collagen loss, wrinkle formation & inflammation) increase in mature skin.
We're entering a new era of biome-centred skincare, where probiotics and their bioferments are used to enhance the microbiome to help protect the skin against aging factors such as oxidative stress, for a more radiant complexion.
balancing act
Age-defying bacteria
Lactobacillus is one beneficial skin bacteria that significantly decreases as we age. A probiotic superstar, small populations of Lactobacillus strains are found naturally in the skin ecosystem, especially in younger women.
One of its main anti-aging benefits is helping maintain skin cells' structural support system, the extracellular matrix (ECM), by inhibiting enzymes that break down ECM components like collagen, elastin, and lipids etc.
Because the ECM is a hub for skin regeneration and repair, applying probiotic Lactobacillus supports resilient skin & healthier aging.
Healthier skin aging
Bacterial bio-ferments
As Lactobacillus declines, we also lose its beneficial anti-aging molecules too. One of the key molecules is extracellular vesicles (EVs). Lactobacillus EV's are nanoparticles that help the bacteria survive and communicate, but also suppress skin aging factors - specifically reducing wrinkle formation, decreasing pigmentation, and improving skin moisture.
Because Lactobacillus strains on the skin are linked to lower-grade wrinkles, increased elastin expression (which keeps skin supple), and protection of skin cells from oxidative stress, replenishing the skin with Lactobacillus and its bio-ferments (found in our coconut oil) can help us age more gracefully.
